Christian songwriter Matthew West is a storyteller with lyrics. He paints a picture of real
life stories with his songs. He is known for "Day One", "Hello My Name Is..","You Are
Everything", and many more. In 2019, West started his record label, The Storyhouse
Collective, to pass on the tradition of storytelling within songwriting while staying true to
Jesus. On February 14th of this year, West released a new album, entitled, "Brand New."
Let's start with the instrumentation of this song. It starts out with soothing vocals and a
soft piano melody that builds into a stronger melodic flow with passionate vocals and
a driving beat that does not take away from the song, it adds to it a valuable way. Let's
dive into the lyrics and what they mean.
Verse 1: "When you close your eyes do you go back there? To a bended knee and a 'Lord, I
need You' whispered prayer. Remember the moment you let Jesus in. Would you give
anything to go back there again?
Verse 1 (meaning): This verse asks the listener if they often think about when they let
Jesus into their lives and if they would go back to that point in their lives.
Pre-Chorus: You feel like a million mistakes and million miles away from the first
time faith of a Child. But oh, I want you to know
Pre-Chorus(meaning): This part of the song hits deep with a message that relates to
how a lot of people feel when they think that they have made to many mistakes for God
to love them, but if you have child-like faith, you can know how much God always loves
Chorus: He's making you new. He's making you new. He's healing your heart right where
you are. If only you knew, He's lifting your shame, He's changing your name.
And when you look back the only thing that You'll see is His grace. Has been making you
brand new. He is making you brand new.
Chorus(meaning): The chorus discusses the amazing construct that God is constantly
working on us in every situation. He doesn't make us come to Him, he comes to us right
where we are at. He takes all of the shame and brokenness away in order to mold us into
the person that He created us to be. Looking back on life, we'll be able to see His grace
that covers us, not the mistakes we made.
