Okay ya'll, let's be real..we all have those artists whose music and personality resonate deep inside of us for so many reasons. I don't know who that is for you but for me, I would have to say that artist is up and coming Coby James. He is so down to earth, relaxed, and has a heart after God. In today's culture, it can be so hard to find Christian music that you can tell comes from someone who is one hundred percent following after God, and after talking to Coby I know this to be true. Take a listen to his new single Paradise and check out this interview below!
M: Is there an album or an EP on the horizon for your career? If so, what do you want to convey with your music, what’s the message behind what you want to do?
CJ: Yeah! Right before the tour, in september...there are 5 songs on it and they are all special to me. For the song Paradise, how I came up with the riff is interesting...my family was going to disney world and I was like I can't go, I have to finish this riff...Happier is about my grandfather who I've never met...he walked out on my grandma and my dad, and so this song is about me praying that he is happier.
M: So what's your process when it comes to writing songs and before? Do you pray in preparation for the session?
CJ: I sleep in the studio and the person I write with has a studio in his home. I get up in the morning, do my quiet time, and make sure that I'm mentally and spiritually ready for the day and songwriting. I have to be mentally and physically okay. A writer will come in and then we all sit down and talk...I have a notes app in my phone and any inspiration I have I'll write down. Normally, I have an idea what i want it to be about. I start with a guitar riff and show it to a writer...my stuff is normally based on being a high schooler that’s christian...saying everything through a christian standpoint. You have to be rooted in a firm foundation in your faith. I want to capture your ears and then show you my faith.
M: Ever since you were little, did you always see yourself as an artist or were there other things you considered doing?
CJ: i’ve always loved acting...did the singing parts in it, I also painted...love dramas, oil paintings...all arts been in my life. You understand yourself more, and I can glorify the Lord with it.
M: When did you start music?
CJ: I started when i was 7, whenever something would happen I would express myself through music, my dad said there wasn’t a lot of christian pop singers and he thought i had the gift for it so I went for it.
M: Who are your influences when it comes to music?
CJ: I love john mayer...shawn mendes is one of my influences, I'm definitely a guitarist….i play electric and acoustic, me and my dad actually made one...got a new neck for it and re-did the wiring, I'm actually bringing it on tour with me! Piano isn't as much my thing, I'm actually playing piano on the tour and I'm really nervous about it...guitar is normally my thing.
CJ: I got really blessed with this tour, i don't have a record deal yet, kind of in a weird place right now..Its like surreal and hard to comprehend
M: So how did you first meet Danny and get asked to go on tour?
CJ: My team connected with his team...we talked about stuff and we parted ways, I was making music...I was leading worship and I got a call from my manager and he like dude you might have the danny gokey tour! It was down to me and three other artists and whatever God’s got for me was the plan. It's a huge testament to who he is because I'm not a huge christian artist
M: So just to get to know you a little more, here are some random questions!
CJ: Yeah of course, go for it!
M: Favorite Movie?
CJ: Ooohhh that's a hard one....Edge of Tomorrow with Tom Cruise is pretty cool
M: Favorite Book?
CJ: I'm not really sure, um I read the Bible! Actually right now I'm reading a book called At The Crossroads and it's about christian music.
M: Any cool things you like to do?
M: Any other interesting things you want everyone to know?
CJ: umm well I opened for Shane and Shane last year! There's not really much else, I'm not a very interesting person
M: I mean you're going on tour with Danny Gokey so I don't think that's entirely true
CJ: Haha okay...it was great talking to you, thank you for wanting to talk to me
M: Of course! Thank you for being willing to do this interview!
Coby James and Danny Gokey will be going on tour this Fall for 31 tour dates, so go out and see them if you have the chance!
Every once in a while you hear a song that impacts you so deep, you can't help but share
it with the people around you. Music is a form of expression that shows feelings and
emotions that is hard to be expressed any other way. As humans we all tend to think
that we are lost causes, that we don't have anything to offer; but that couldn't be farther
from the truth. No matter where we are or no matter how far we stray from the right
path, there is always someone there, the God who stays. The one and only true God who
is always there for us in the good and the bad. "If I were You I would've turned around
and walked away. I would've labeled me beyond repair. Cause I feel like I'm beyond
repair. But somehow You don't see me like I do. Somehow You're still here. You're the God
who stays." That is such a powerful lyrics because Matthew West is saying that if we as
humans were looking at the situation, we wouldn't pick ourselves because we tend to
see ourselves as broken shells of people, but if we were to look at ourselves the way
that God sees us, we would be much better off, and no matter what He always stays
through everything. West truly encapsulates the amazing feeling of knowing we have an
amazing God with us through everything with his newest single, The God Who
Stays, available wherever music is sold. Stream on youtube here.
