Don't you love hearing about a new song and discovering a new artist that you can jam to wherever you are? An artist that's authentic and genuine? I know I do! A little over a year ago, Centricity Music signed Isaac Peabody, also known as PEABOD and let me just say, they did the right thing. I got the opportunity to ask him some questions not too long ago and thought I would share his amazing outlook on life and music while still staying true to his faith. Here's the interview below:
Mercedes: What is your thought process going into the songwriting process?
PEABOD: Typically I try to come up with a concept first, and then I think about how I want the song to feel. For example, when I was writing Shoot From the Hip, I knew I wanted to write a song about millennials that highlighted how unsteady we feel as adults sometimes. The phrase "shoot from the hip" came to mind and totally summed up that feeling. This then informed how the beat sounded and the direction that I wanted to take the lyrics. Hopefully people walk away from listening with a defiant confidence that even though we don't always know what we're doing, we can make fun of ourselves and it's going to be okay.
Mercedes: How do you show the light of Jesus in your everyday life, especially being in the limelight?
PEABOD: This is a great question! If I was just talking about Jesus on stage and being a jerk to everyone in real life, that would be a huge problem. I'm not going to pretend I perfectly shine the light of our Lord every day, but I do try to be intentional by loving my fiancée well, serving at my church, working hard at my other job, expanding my circle to include more people who don’t know Jesus, etc.
Mercedes: Did you always see yourself as a Christian artist or did you see yourself doing something else?
PEABOD: I’ve been a Christian since I was little, and I’ve wanted to be an artist since probably 6th grade. That said, as much as my faith is a huge part of who I am, I don’t think I always wanted to be labeled as a “Christian artist.” I had been writing music for a long time, trying to write better and better songs that felt more honest to who I am. As my faith grew, I knew that I wouldn’t want a listener to walk away from my album going “I wonder what he believes...” I knew that I wanted the hope I know to be evident. I’m THRILLED to be signed to an incredible Christian label and to be a part of Christian music, but I think it’s different than the world I thought I would end up in. That said, I’m so glad God is in control instead of me because I think this is the right path. He knows what he’s doing and that’s about all I know (haha).
Mercedes: Who are your influences? Song wise and influences in your everyday life?
PEABOD: Musically, I’m heavily influenced by artists like Chance the Rapper, Switchfoot (Jon Foreman specifically), Coldplay, The Black Keys, Anderson .Paak, Kendrick Lamar, Chris Stapleton, and Lin Manuel Miranda to name a few. All of these are songwriters that I have the utmost respect for. In life, I’m very inspired by my family, my fiancée, my close friends, my church, and also things like good movies or great parties.
Mercedes: What is your favorite song that you have ever written and why?
PEABOD: I think probably A PEAceful Outroduction. It was the second to last song I wrote for Healthy Snacks and it serves as a stand-in mission statement. I had a ton of fun with the beat and the lyrics and it was also a challenge so the finished product felt really rewarding. Either that or Steady, because I really love my fiancée :)
As you can see, Issac Peabody is a very down to earth artist who stays true to his faith and family while also being an amazing singer/rapper/songwriter. Check out his favorite song from the EP!
